WHO ARE
WE ?
Communication between people or businesses
has always played an important part of everyday life. Our interest in communicating with
people electronically began at University, where the Internet was a tool for communication
between academics and at that time did not provide any graphical or mouse prompts to
navigate.
In the early 1990's affordable modems were still in their infancy. At this time Computer Systems Support (Mackay) established modem
communications with their suppliers using a proprietary (or closed) mail system. This
proved extremely successful with the immediate benefits of transferring files, information
and contacting busy technical staff, not to mention the reduction in distance telephone
calls.
By the mid 1990's modems had become affordable to purchase. This spurred an increased
interest in communication technologies. The improvement of operating systems and support
software from the major players to handle remote networking and communications enticed
Computer Systems Support (Mackay) to invest resources into the establishment of a
communication service for the local community and businesses of Mackay and district.
This began with research into suitable software and hardware to provide a simpler
interface for connecting users together than was previously available. The major hurdle to
integrating communication into mainstream computing was the users understanding of how to
setup, maintain and control remote communications.
Our first system was operational with a small number of users for testing purposes.
Improvements and testing continued for a period of over two years. During this time we
collected a lot of valuable experience and data with users online and how various pieces
of hardware and software responded with the system. This experience would give us the edge
on integrating computer communications into the lives of the computer enthusiast as well
as the first time user.
The system today boasts a high performance download efficiency for its users through the
array of file servers and high-speed data links. Upgrades and maintenance occur on a
regular basis. System reliability is very high due to its environmental stability as well
as the redundant systems in place in case of hardware failure. Capacity favours our
customers. Customers are able to connect at any time without hearing the engage signal. We
are currently only using 15% of our system capacity.
